Where Did Reggae Music Originate?
February 16, 2009
Reggae music originated in Jamaica during the late 1960’s. Many people think that Reggae is one music that describes every sound that comes out of Jamaica but their wrong. The reggae beat and style that originated after the development of Ska and Rock-steady. Reggae has a distinctive sound that distiquiese it from the others due to its regular chops and the off beat that’s referred as the skank. The Tempo is generally slower than that found in Ska and Rocksteady.
The Rastafari movement has played a vital role in Reggae music even up today, 1 out of 3 Jamaican are Rastafari. Reggae music is all about poverty, social injustice, religion and love and because of the turmoil that jamaica has faced over the years it speaks from the soul.
Reggae music is generally mixed from tradition African beat drum and from the Caribbean and it has a mix of English and Jamaica patios. The origins of the word “Reggae” is still out on the table.
The Oxford English Dictionary says that the origin is not found (unknown) but could be derived from the Jamaican slang word rega-rege what translates to quarrel. Many other Jamaicans believe that it could have come from the Bantu speaking tribe from Lake Tanganyika they used to call prostitutes “Streggea”. Bob Marley said to that the word reggae came from a Spanish term for “the king’s music”. The liner notes of To the King, a compilation of Christian gospel reggae, suggest the Origins and development

Thanks to musical genius such as Bob Marley during the 1960’s reggae was not only becoming famous in Jamaica but internationally known. United Kingdom had a big role to play by playing all reggae music on the radio stations and it blended well with the punk rock era. Many U.K bands were influenced by the reggae beat and incorporated in their own music such as Clash and the Slits.
During the 1970’s the hot Jamaica movie “The Harder They Come” starring Jimmy Cliff helped boost the popularity of reggae music all around the world. Not only where there movie helping the cause but Eric Claptons 1974 cover of the Bob Marley song ” I Shot The Sheriff” would open the door and bring Reggae music into North America.
Now in the year 2009 Reggae music is extremely popular and has broken down many walls and made its way across the world influencing many people. Reggae music has helped make way for a newer type of music such as “Dancehall” for the younger generation.
